The elderly will decline in functional system due to the process of aging. The elderly who experience decline in functional systems will lead to immobilization and will be easy to get illness that increase the probability to be hospitalized. METHODS: This study is a cross sectional study with descriptive approach. The study was conducted by interviewing respondents using a sociodemographic questionnaire and Barthel Index to determine respondents’ level of dependence with Barthel Index score obtained. Samples will be collected from 94 elderly patients in internal medicine department of Atma Jaya Hospital. Data will be collected and analyzed using SPSS 17.0 descriptively. RESULTS: The results showed that 58 respondents (61.7%) functional status were in the category of severe dependency, 13 respondents (13.8%) in moderate dependency, 5 respondents (5.3%) in mild dependency, 4 respondents ( 4.3%) in total dependency and 14(14.9%) respondents in independent. Most of the elderly patients were in hospitalized for 3-8 days and 32 respondents (34.0%) experienced severe dependency level. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the elderly patients in internal medicine department of Atma Jaya Hospital experienced the decline of functional status in severe dependency category with the length of stay for 3-8 days.
