Abstract
Introduction : Pregnancy is never fully risk-free. Any complications can affect both mother and baby’s health and associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Antenatal care is one way to control any complications in pregnancy. This study aimed to identify any associations between frequency of antenatal care visits and maternal and fetal outcomes.
Methods : This study is an analytic-descriptive study, using medical record from 3 health facilities as data sources. The sample of this study is women who had given birth in those facilities. Antenatal care data is taken based on frequency of visits they have during pregnancy. Complications such as hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, post partum hemorrhage, infection during pregnancy, and other complications are taken as maternal outcomes, and infant birth weight, gestational age at delivery, and 5-minute APGAR score are taken as fetal outcomes. Data analysis using Chi Square test with significancy (P value) <0,05.
Result : Total data collected are 118. As much as 31 respondents (26,27%) have antenatal care visits less than 4 times, and 87 respondents (73,73%) have antenatal care visits more or equal to 4 times during pregnancy. From 3 maternal outcome variables, only hypertensive disorders in pregnancy have significant association with antenatal care visits (p=0,000). Infant birth weight and prematurity have significant association with antenatal care visits (p=0,000 and p=0,000 respectively, meanwhile the 5-minute APGAR score doesn’t have significant association with antenatal care visits (p=0,053).
Conclusion :Frequency of antenatal care visits does have significant association with hypertension in pregnancy, infant birth weight and infant prematurity, but does not have significant association with post partum hemorrhage, infection during pregnancy and 5-minute APGAR score.
