Abstract
BACKGROUND: Low quality of sleep has been linked with reduced physical and mental body function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) omega 3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and vitamin B12 are important in regulating good quality of sleep. Due to limited nutrient sources, vegan diets are low in DHA, EPA and vitamin B12. The relationship between vegan diets and quality of sleep is not known.
METHODS: This study is cross sectional in design and uses a dietary questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. 314 adults aged 18-65 were selected through non-probability sampling to fill the questionnaires. Out of the total sample population, half were vegan and the other half were non-vegans. PSQI is used to quantify sleep disturbances in the last month. Collected data from the questionnaire is then analyzed using the Chi Square test.
RESULTS: Results from the study showed that there isn’t a significant relationship between vegan and non-vegan diet with quality of sleep (p = 0,305). The Chi Square test results for each of the individual diet variables (non-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, and vegan) and their relation to quality of sleep also confirmed the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between vegan diet and quality of sleep (p = 0.218).
CONCLUSION: A significant relationship between vegan and non-vegan diets with quality of sleep was not found.
