Abstract
Background : Sleep deprivation is a very common problem among college students.
A research in 2014 indicates 70,6% of college students having sleep deprivation and
60% of those are having a poor quality of sleep. Physical activity has plenty of
beneficial effects on human’s health, one of those is to help initiating ones sleep.
Referring to this benefit, it’s later being thought about the association of physical
activity and quality of sleep among college students.
Methods : The research used an analytic design with cross-sectional approach.
Respondents were chosen from Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine year 2013 by Simple
Random Sampling. The respondents were given informed consent, followed by
Global Physical Activity Questionairre to measure their physical activity, and
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to measure their quality of sleep. The analysis was
done using chi-square methods to find the significance.
Results : The research involved 83 respondents, with 70 respondents qualified for
the criterias. The quality of sleep was measured with 50 having a poor quality of
sleep and 20 having a good quality of sleep. The physical activity was also measured
with 25 in low category, 24 in moderate, and 21 in high category. The chi-square
test was done resulting a p-value of 0,014 (p<0,05) which means the nil hypothesis
is rejected.
Conclusion : There is an association between physical activity and quality of sleep
among the students of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine year 2013.
