Abstract
Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases are often found in primary health care. Uncontrolled hypertension can cause complications in the heart. Lifestyle modification is an important effort in controlling blood pressure and may increase the effectiveness of pharmacological therapy in patients with hypertension. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) have a mineral content and l-citrulline which can be used as an adjunct therapy in patients with hypertension. Watermelon lowers blood pressure by inhibiting the activity of serum Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE), increases nitric oxide production, and increased levels of potassium. The method used in this scientific paper is the literature study by performing various steps of research, the literature search and data extraction. Six of the ten studies suggest watermelon has a significant effect on the reduction in high blood pressure. Watermelon dosage form of 300 grams of fresh fruit and extract powder 6 grams. There is no side effects were found in the respondents. The conclusion of this study is the watermelon can be used as an adjunct therapy in patients with hypertension. Eating watermelon is more effective in extract form. However, watermelon extract is still rare in Indonesia and require further research.
