Abstract
BACKGROUND : Since the invention of the light bulb, the activities undertaken by humans such work could be longer that of course this may result in changes to the human biological clock, and the consequences of sleep has been poor. Poor quality sleep can cause depression and or anxiety disorders.
METHODS : This study is a cross sectional study. The study was conducted by interviewing respondents to determine whether they have depressive disorder and anxiety disorder with MINI ICD-10, then respondents will fill up a Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Samples will be collected from as many as 260 preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Data will be collected and analyzed by using Chi Square test.
RESULTS : The results showed that there were 60 (61.5%) students who have a good sleep quality, 12 (4.6%) of students experienced a major depressive disorder and 22 (8.5%) students experience anxiety disorders. For 100 (38.5%) of students with poor sleep quality, 31 (11.9%) of students experiencing depression and 44 (16.9%) students experience anxiety disorders. The Chi Square test showed that there was a significant association between sleep quality and depressive disorder (p=0.000) and there was a significant association too between sleep quality and anxiety disorder (p=0.000) in preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in academic year 2015/2016.
CONCLUSION : Preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with poor sleep quality have 5.54 times higher risk to get depressive disorder dan 4.92 times higher risk to get anxiety disorder compared with preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with good sleep quality.
