Abstract
Background: Stress is a common problem faced by medical students. Some Faculty of Medicine around the world reported a high incidence of stress in medical students. Many theories attempt to explain how stress can affect a person's quality of sleep. This research was conducted in order to determine whether there is a association between stress and sleep quality among medical student of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia Class 2013.
Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. This study uses two kinds of questionnaires which are Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 42 (DASS-42) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), filled independently by the respondent coupled with sleep quality logbook that is required to be filled for a month.
Results: From the results of data processing obtained 1) 22.2% of respondents were male, while 77.8% of respondents were female. 2) 26.7% of respondents experienced stress, while 73.3% of respondents did not experience stress. 3) In the respondents who experienced stress, 70.8% had poor sleep quality, and 29.2% had a good sleep quality. 4) In the respondents who did not experience stress, 43.9% of respondents had poor sleep quality, and 56.1% had a good sleep quality. 5) The p-value = 0.044
Conclusion: The results of chi-square test found there is an association between stress and sleep quality in medical students.
