Introduction: Depression is a mental disorder which characterized by sadness, loss of will, feeling guilty or doesn’t appreciate himself, sleep disorder, loss of apetite, fatique, and decreasing of the concentration according to WHO. Depression in elder is associated with morbidity and mortality, the second largest cause of disability in elderly, and caused a poor prognosis in many dissease. One major causes of depression are low education level. In elderly, depression usually accompanied by cognitive decline such as a mild cognitive decline in memory, processing speed and the executive function. Methods: This research is a descriptive analytic cross sectional study with 51 samples aged 60 and older in Pusaka 12 and Pusaka 67 West Jakarta. Depression measured by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) – 15 and the memory function is measured with World List Memory Immediate Recall (WLMIR) for working memory which a part of Consortium to Established a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) and saving score for delayed recall-memory. Result: Among 51 respondents there are 11 elders with depression, 40 elders with working memory impairment and 22 elders with delayed memory impairment. According to the analysis using Chi-Square, there isn’t any significant relationship between depression and working memory (p=0,684; OR=0,667) and delayed memory (p=0,489; OR=1,8) Discussion: There are many factors which be able to affect the depression level and the cognitive function in elderly, such as social support, gender, age and each person’s personality. |
