Abstract
Background : Medical Students have high risk of having stress (Academically related and non academically related stress). Stress can affect many aspect of people’s life, one of them is menstrual cycle.
Objective : To study the relationship and correlation between stress level and menstrual cycle among medical students at Atma Jaya Catholic University
Methods : This is a cohort study of 80 Atma Jaya female medical students chosen-using total sampling which suitable in inclusion criteria. This research was taken place at Atma Jaya Catholic University from April 2016 until July 2016. A DASS-42 questionnaire and menstrual cycle questionnaire was utilised. Data were analyzed using Chi Square Test and Pearson test.
Result : The age range of the respondents is between 19-22 years old. 60% of the students did not have stress while 40% did. Of which, 16.25% had slight stress, 18.75% had moderate stress, and 1.25% had severe stress. Normal menstrual cycle was experienced by 62.5% of the respondents, while 37.5% of them had irregular menstrual cycle. 88.75% had normal duration of menstrual period, and 11.25% had longer menstrual period. 80% had normal menstrual bleeding, 18.75% had light menstrual bleeding, and 1.25% had high level of menstrual bleeding. Analysis by Chi-Square and Pearson shows there is correlation between stress levels and menstrual cycle (p=0.005, p=0.004) with R=0.361. However there is no correlation between stress levels and the duration of the menstrual period (p=0.248), as well as the volume of menstrual bleeding (p=0.361).
Conclusion: The level of stress is associated with menstrual cycle among medical students of Atma Jaya. Students with stress will have irregular menstrual cycle compared to students with no stress. There is no correlation between stress level and length of menstrual period either with menstrual bleeding.
