Abstract
Background : Prehypertension is the condition of having systolic blood pressure between 120-139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure between 80-89 mmHg. Ninety percent of individuals with prehypertension have at least one other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. CVD is the number 1 cause of death globally. Prehypertension prevention must be started at young age because it will influence blood pressure later in life. Prevention of prehypertension can be done with moderate physical activity.
Objectives : This study is aimed to examine the correlation between physical activity level and blood pressure.
Methods : This is a cross sectional study conducted on preclinical medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia Faculty of Medicine. Physical activity level is acquired by International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the blood pressure are measured by using casual sphygmomanometer.
Results : Using spearman test, there is a significant correlation between physical activity level and blood pressure (p=0.03). There is a weak correlation and negative linear relationship between physical activity level and blood pressure (r=-0.185).
Conclusion : There is a significant correlation between physical activity level and blood pressure among medical students of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine. Students with moderate physical activity level is having more likely normal blood pressure (71,6%) than prehypertension (28,4%).
