Abstract
Background. Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that has many medical complications. As its role in diabetes, Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) can be used as an alternative treatment in lowering blood sugar in diabetic patients.
Objectives. This study is undertaken to compare the effectiveness of Abelmoschus esculentus L. extract against Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract in lowering blood sugar levels on induced-alloxan Rattus norvegicus.
Methods. This study is an in vivo experimental. This experimental using 30 Rattus norvegicus rats strain Sprague dawley that induced alloxan before and divided into six groups; the negative control group, positive control group (using glibenclamide), okra extract with 100mg/kgBW dose group, okra extract with 200mg/kgBW dose group, roselle extract with 100mg/kgBW dose group, and roselle extract with
200mg/kgBW dose group. Interventions carried out for 12 days and checking the blood sugar every two days using glucose test strip and tools from GlucoDR. Data
were collected and analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Paired T Test, One Way ANOVA and post-hoc test.
Result. The results showed that the data were normally distributed (Shapiro-Wilk test p> 0.05). Okra and roselle extract with various doses for 12 days led to a significant drop in blood sugar (paired T test p <0.05), there is a difference between the groups (One Way ANOVA test p<0,05), but there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of the treatment group (post hoc test p> 0.05).
Conclusion. There were no differences in effectiveness of Abelmoschus esculentus L. extract compared with Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract in lowering blood sugar levels on induced-alloxan Rattus norvegicus, but both extract can lowering rats’ blood sugar significantly.
