Abstract
Background: Degenerative process made the elderly prone to fall. Fall in elderly is caused by balance disorder, mobility and lower limb muscle strength disorder. The purpose of this research is to assess fall risk in “pralansia” women by evaluating their balance, mobility, and lower limb muscle strength.
Methods: The design of this research was cross-sectional study. Subjects were women age 50-64. Balance, mobility, and lower limb muscle strength were assessed by using BBS, TUG, and CST. Physical exercise was assessed by using questionnaire. Unpaired t-test or Mann-Whitney analysis were used to identify differences between regular and non regular exercise group. Statistical significance was set at a p-value of less than 0,05.
Results: This study participants were 89 “pralansia” women. Of these, 43 subjects (48.3%) exercised regularly and 46 subjects (51.7%) exercised not regularly. Statistic analysis showed that mean age in regular exercise and nonregular exercise group were not significant (55.7 vs 55.6, P=0,89). Statistic analysis showed that BBS and TUG score were both insignificant (54.7 vs 55.1, P=0.11, 7.2 vs 7.8, P=0.058) while CST score in regular exercise group was higher than nonregular group (25.6 vs 22.4, P=0.013)
Conclusions: Physical exercise can effectively promote lower limb muscle strength in “pralansia” women, proven by higher CST score in women with regular physical exercise. Physical exercise is less effective in promoting balance and mobility in “pralansia” women.
