Abstract
Background: Insomnia is often associated with depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. Lack of sleep can affect physical and cognitive function in medical students significantly, especially in terms of information processing and difficulty in concentration and memory, which in turn can lead to depressive disorder and anxiety disorder.
Methods: This study is a cross sectional study. The study was conducted by interviewing respondents to determine whether they have depressive disorder and anxiety disorder with MINI ICD-10, then respondents will fill up an Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire. Samples will be collected from as many as 260 preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Data will be collected and analyzed by using Chi Square test.
Results: The results showed that there were 42.3% of medical students with insomnia, 16.5% with depressive disorder, and 25.4% with anxiety disorder. The Chi Square test showed that there was a significant association between insomnia and depressive disorder or anxiety disorder in preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia year 2015 (p= 0.000 and p= 0.006).
Conclusion: Preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with insomnia have higher risk to get depressive disorder
5,184 times or to get anxiety disorder 2,3 times compared with preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia without
insomnia.
