Abstract
BACKGROUND: Culture is one of the factors that plays role in influencing mental disorder both depressive disorder and anxious disorder. The level of tightness and looseness of a culture will have an impact on psychological profiles are different from one another. They who have cultural looseness predicted to be more susceptible to depressive disorder and anxious disorder compared with those who have cultural tightness. METHODS:This study is a cross sectional study. Respondents were interviewed using ICD-10 MINI to determine whether they have depressive disorder or anxiety disorder with MINI ICD-10, then respondents will fill up a Cultural Tightness/Looseness (CTL) questionnaire. Samples will be collected from as many as 260 preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Data will be collected and analyzed by using Chi Square test. RESULTS:The results showed that there were 50,8% of medical students with Cultural Tightness, 49,2% of medical students with Cultural Looseness, 16.5% with depressive disorder, and 25.4% with anxiety disorder. The Chi Square test showed that there was an insignificant association between Cultural Tightness/Looseness and depressive disorder (p=0.161) and there was a significant association between Cultural Tightness/Looseness and anxiety disorder (p=0.000) in preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in academic year 2015/2016. CONCLUSION:Preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with cultural looseness have higher risk to get anxiety disorder 3,036 times compared with preclinical students of faculty of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with cultural tightness.
