Background: Medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia used to have low level of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) regarding influenza and influenza vaccination. Therefore, an education intervention using problem-based learning method had been done. The result of that study showed an increase of the KAP scores. However, KAP ideally nedd to be retained long term. Therefore a study to investigate the retention of the KAP is needed. This study also serves to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL method. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the retention of KAP in medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia within 24-28 weeks following PBL on influenza and influenza vaccination. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. 42 medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia year 2013 and 2014 who had received PBL on influenza and influenza vaccination and completed posttest I in April 2015 took posttest II in October-November 2015. Result: There were significant differences between pretest and posttest II in knowledge (50,76 ± 9,793 vs 60,07 ± 9,185; p < 0,001), attitude ((65,26 ± 16,761 vs 74,67 ± 15,101; p = 0,002), and practice (45,48 ± 18,24 vs 60,71 ±16,877; p < 0,001) that proved retention. The analysis showed that the mean of the retention of knowledge, attitude, and practice (in percentage of posttest II score to posttest I score) were 86,09 ± 17,039; 96,12 ± 25,129; and 95,81 ± 27,271respectively. There was no significant difference between retention of knowledge, attitude and practice (p = 0,089). Conclusion: PBL results in retention of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding influenza and influenza vaccination within 24-28 weeks in medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. |
