Abstract
Background. 70-80% of the world's population use traditional medicine for their primary health care. Despite being widely used for their medicinal properties, A.esculentus (okra) could cause the degradation of testicular tissues if consumed for a long period of time.
Objective. Quantitively count Sertoli cells number of Sprague Dawley rats to know the effects of administering okra to the testes.
Method. This is an experimental research with analytical study. Okra pods was sun dried, finely crushed, then extracted. The extract was administered each day to
Sprague Dawley rats which were divided to 4 groups of 7 rats: control group(1), dose of 250mg/kgBW(2), 500mg/kgBW(3), and 750mg/kgBW(4). By the end of 28
days, the testes were weighed and made to histological preparations. Total Sertoli cells number then counted.
Results. The datas acquired show that with increasing dosage of okra, the total Sertoli count per testes automatically decreased. The mean numbers of Sertoli cells counted from group 1 to 4 are 27.94 x106 (±2.01 SEM), 21.62 x106 (±1.19 SEM), 15.90 x106 (±1.03 SEM), 9.90 x106 (±0.51 SEM) respectively. The reduced Sertoli cells count can be found even on the lowest given dose and on the highest dose the testicular tissues are visibly damaged thus the Sertoli cells are arduously counted. This experiment was proved meaningful with 95% confidence level (P < 0.05).
Conclusion. Administering okra reduce Sertoli cells count of rats in reproductive age. The reduced Sertoli cells count affects the differentiation of germinal sperm cells and thus may lead to infertility. This anti-fertility trait of okra can be used as a form of a natural and reversible contraceptive method.
