Abstract
Background: Bullying behavior is a phenomenal health problem, the prevalence keeps rising. There are various roles in bullying behavior in which the students are involve. The various roles in bullying behavior are victim, perpetrator, victim-perpetrator, and bystander. Bullying behavior affects the physical and mental development of all the students who are involved in it by any means.
Objectives: This study aimed to describe bullying behavior among junior high school students in Penjaringan district, North Jakarta.
Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in several Junior High Schools based in Penjaringan district, Jakarta Utara on January to March 2016. Respondents were asked to fill in demographics questionnaires and bullying behavior questionnaires (Olweus Bullying Questionnaires). The data was analyzed through univariate descriptive.
Results: There are 35.8% students who were involved in bullying, 16.7% as victims, 10.9% as victims and perpetrators, 8.2% as perpetrators, and 48.8% as bystanders. Among the bystanders,76.1% acted as defenders. The most common location of bullying was the classroom when teachers are not present (44.4%). The most common form of bullying is verbal (38.1%) and other students in the same class were more likely to be perpetrators (72.6%). Victims tended not to tell anybody about the bullying (38.7%). Female students were more likely to become victims (10.6%) and bystanders (33.9%) than male students while male students were more likely to become perpetrators (5.5%) and victims and perpetrators (7.1%) than female students.
Conclusion: Prevalence of bullying behaviors among junior high school students in Penjaringan district is high (35.8%). Preventive and curative comprehensive programs are required to reduce prevalence of bullying and its debilitating effect on physical and mental health of students.
