Abstract
Background: The World Bank in 2013, noted that Indonesia ranks third highest maternal mortality rate in ASEAN. According to Pedoman Antenatal Terpadu, the causes of maternal deaths in Indonesia are complications of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, such as bleeding, pre-eclampsia / eclampsia, infection, obstructed labor and abortion. Delivery attended by professional birth attendants and on time would make delivery went well and ensure the safety of mother and baby. There are still many families who are choosing traditional birth attendants because of their beliefs or because of the low cost compared to a midwife or hospital. Mentawai Islands is one of the areas that the health facilities are still few so that medical practice were done by Sikerei (Ethnic treatment Mentawai shaman), especially in the West. This study was conducted to determine the preferences of pregnant women in Muara Siberut in selecting birth attendants and the factors that influence their choice.
Objectives: The study aim was to describe the preferences and factors influencing choice of birth attendants in Muara Siberut
Methods: This study is a comparative analytical study with cross sectional design. The samples taken were 67 mothers in Muara Siberut who have or are pregnant. The mothers were asked to answer a questionnaire on 23th November 2015. From the data obtained performed univariate and bivariate data processing. The analysis used was Fisher's exact test
Result: The majority of respondents aged 20-49 years, 66 of 67 (98.5%) of mothers in school, and 40 (59.7%) of mothers did not work. Midwives are the choice of most mothers as birth attendants in first (49.3%) and current (40.3%) pregnancy in Muara Siberut. The results of Fisher test showed that the cost of labor became a factor that affects the mother in choosing a birth attendant in first pregnancy (p = 0.006), while other factors like age, education, occupation, income mothers, parity, family support and the culture does not give effect to the preference of mothers in choose a birth attendant (p> 0.05) Conclusion: Midwives are the choice of the mother as a birth attendant in Muara Siberut and the cost is the factor that affects the mother in choosing a birth attendant. Culture Muara Siberut has no effect on the preferences of mothers about birth helper.
