Abstract
Background: Bullying is a social concern that is commonly found in social community that leads to stress and can manifest as mental and emotional problems (anxiety disorders or depression). Bullying behaviors can result in deleterious effects on physical and psychological aspects of individual’s self, family, school, and in surrounding environments.
Purpose: To find out levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among junior high school students with bullying behaviors in Penjaringan District, North Jakarta.
Methods: This cross-sectional study in which 1160 junior high school students were involved was conducted in Penjaringan District, North Jakarta. DASS-42 questionnaire and demographic questionnaire was used and was taken directly by the responders. Data was analyzed descriptively.
Result: There were 1160 junior high school students with age ranging from 11-17 years old, most of them were 14 years old (32.1%). There are 35.1% of students who were involved in bullying behaviors: 16.5% as victims, 7.7% as perpetrators, and 10.9% as bully-victims. On the other hand, the remaining 64.9% of students involved as bystanders. Female students were mostly victims (52.6%) and bystanders (58.6%), while male students were mostly perpetrators (57.3%) and bully-victims (55.6%). 23.9% of students were in stress, 51.6% had anxiety, and 13.6% had depression. The stress levels were mostly mild (11.3%), the anxiety levels were mostly moderate (22.6%) and the depression levels were mostly mild (7.1%). Stress (14.6%) and anxiety (30.7%) were more prevalent in female students, while depression was more prevalent in male students (7.2%).
Conclusion: Most of the victims, perpetrators, and bystanders of the bullying behaviors have mild levels of stress, moderate levels of anxiety, and mild levels of depression. While most of the bully-victims have moderate levels of stress and moderate levels of anxiety. The levels of depression are more severe among male students and milder among female students.
