We review 3 themes from the literature on family care giving to the elderly: What is family care giving? What are its outcomes? and what is it's relation to formal caregiving? We conclude that (a) family care giving should be distinguished from other aid exdul1Ige. (b) caregiving perceptions may vary by gender and relationship, (c) researchers and practitioners should attend 10 caregiving's positive outcomes, and (d) interventions may be beneficial whenfamily and professional caregivers are conceptu. alized as partners.
