Abstract
Background. Tuberculosis is the second infectious disease leading cause of death
around the world. Since 1995, Indonesia adopts DOTS as the strategy for controlling
tuberculosis. The most important key of DOTS is DOT observer which is very useful
to improve patient’s adherence. However, there were many DOT observers who did
not do their tasks properly. Besides, mobile short message service (SMS) has the
potential to help particularly Health Care Worker (HCW-DOT) to promote
adherence to tuberculosis treatment.
Objectives. The main aim of this research is to get a better knowledge about the
effects of SMS reminders, particularly on pulmonary TB patient’s adherence in the
intensive phase.
Methods. This true experimental study was performed in Puskesmas Kecamatan
Pademangan, North Jakarta in July – November 2016. Patients recruited into either
the group ofpatients who receive SMS by HCW-DOT three times a week, which
remind and educate the patients and the other group is not. Each group has Family
Member (FM-DOT) that must fill in the medication adherence and adverse effects
checklists every single day.
Results. The result showed that no significant differences between these groups
(p=0.47).
Conclusion and Suggestion. This nonsignificant results from this study perhaps as a
result of small sample size. However the HCW-FM DOT treatment strategy in which
health experts send SMS reminders for the patients seems to bean useful strategy to
improve TB patient’s adherence.
