Abstract
BACKGROUND: High academic load for medical students that leads to poor sleep quality might causes them become more vulnerable to depressive disorders than students from other faculties. Therefore the writer was interested to study further about the association between quality of sleep and depressive disorder among preclinical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, School of Medicine.
METHODS: This study was a cross sectional study. Ninety six preclinical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, School of Medicine were selected using simple random sampling method. Respondents filled up Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to measure sleep quality and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) to measure depressive disorder. The collected data then was analyzed using Chi-Square test.
RESULTS: There were 27.1% respondents with poor sleep quality and 9.4% with depressive disorder. The Chi-Square test showed that there was a significant association between sleep quality and depressive disorder among preclinical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, School of Medicine. (p=0.005).
CONCLUSION: Preclinical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, School of Medicine with poor sleep quality have a higher risk of 6.7 times more to experience depressive disorder than those with good sleep quality.
