Abstract
Background
Student-centered learning (SCL) is a learning method that put students as the focus of learning and has been implemented in many universities, espescially in science, technology, and engineering fields. SCL is in contrast with teacher-centered learning (TCL. However, there are still different arguments on SCL. Some research showed that SCL has positive impact on cognitive (class performance) and soft skills (creativity and self-esteem). Hence, further research and analysis on the correlation between SCL and the class performance and students’ soft skills are needed.
Objective
The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between SCL and class performance, self-esteem, and creativity in the science-based higher education.
Methods
This research utilized meta-analysis for the correlation SCL and the class performance and systematic review for the correlation SCL and self-esteem and creativity. Primary literature was search from DOAJ, EBSCOHOST, Springerlink, dan Proquest from 1990 to 2016.
Results
Twenty six (26) literature were used in this research. Six of them were for meta-analysis and 22 literatures were for the systematic review. SCL is statistically correlated with the class performance (r= 0, 41). But in practice, the correlation was weak. SCL is proven to have positive correlation in increasing self-esteem and creativity. Despite of the lack of study about creativity, it has been proven that SCL enhanced students’ creativity. This research also found that inter-professional collaboration study has a positive effect in improving self-esteem and creativity.
Conclusion
SCL is proven has a positive impact on sutdents’ cognitive and soft skills. This method also enhanced self-esteem and creativity.
