Abstract
Background : Sedentary lifestyles are considered as cause of weight gain, among of them is excess internet use that leads to internet addiction (IA). Change of weight can happen to internet addicts as consequences of continuous internet use that disturbs dietary pattern and physical activity.
Objectives : To explore whether there is a correlation between IA and body mass index (BMI) among medical students of Atma Jaya University class 2013 to 2015.
Methods : This cross sectional research is an observational analytic study, involving 146 students of class year 2013, 2014, and 2015. Internet addiction is determined by using Internet Addiction Test (IAT) questionnaire while body mass index (BMI) is determined by direct measurement of weight and height. Physical activity and eating disorder are also measured to determine whether these factors affect correlation strength of internet addiction and BMI. Data are analysed using software analysis.
Results : 9.6% (14 students) of respondents meet criteria for internet addiction, 5.5% are males and 4.1% are females. Weak correlation was found between IA and BMI (r = -0.021; p >0.05). There is a significant relationship between BMI status with eating disorder (r = 0.185; p< 0.05) and between IA and physical activity (r = -0.231; p <0.001).
Conlusions : Internet addiction does not have significant correlation with BMI status on students school of medicine, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
