Abstract
Background: Depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are two most common mental disorders, both affects people of all ages and one of them is medical student. A person with External Locus of Control thinks that their life is controlled by outside force like luck, fate, destiny, and power people so they have greater risk to get depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. Contrarily, a person with Internal Locus of Control thinks that skill, ability, and effort determine what will they get which become a protective factor against depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between Locus of Control and depressive disorder and anxiety disorder, also the types of Locus of Control which have greater risk to get depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted on student of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine in 2015. The Locus of Control is acquired by Rotter's Locus of Control Scale questionnaire and the depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are acquired by MINI ICD 10 questionnaire. Results: Using chi-square test, there is an association between Locus of Control and depressive disorder (p = 0.001) and anxiety disorder (p = 0.004). Medical students with External Locus of Control have higher risk to get depressive disorder (odds ratio = 3.4) and anxiety disorder (odds ratio = 1.3) compared with medical students with Internal Locus of Control. Conclusions: There is a significant association between Locus of Control and depressive disorder and anxiety disorder among preclinical students of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine in 2015. Students with External Locus of Control have higher risk to get depressive disorder and anxiety disorder compared with students with Internal Locus of Control.
