Abstract
Background: Elderly has high risk of having anxiety and insomnia. Those two conditions can occur concurrently and they have negative effects on each other, thus worsening conditions on the patients.
Objective: To study the correlation between anxiety level and severity of insomnia in the elderly and correlation between characteristic of elderly and anxiety in Santa Anna Nursing Home.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 45 elderly chosen using random sampling in January 2016 at Santa Anna Nursing Home, North Jakarta. Respondents were interviewed with questionnaire of characteristics, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation test and Chi Square.
Results: There were 45 elderly who observed in this research are averagely 74.47 years old, with 57.8% male, 51.1% were married, 62.2% have had children, 42.2% Catholic, 71.1% Chinese and 44.4% with junior high school education. A total of 51.1% had anxiety and 56.6% had insomnia. Spearman Correlation Test shows a significant correlation between level of anxiety and the severity of insomnia in the elderly (p = 0.000), with the power of positive correlation (r = 0.644) states that the higher levels of anxiety, the higher the rate of insomnia in the elderly. There was an association between marital status and have off spring with anxiety in the elderly (p <0.05). There was no association between gender, age, and education with anxiety.
Conclusion: The level of anxiety associated with the severity of insomnia in the elderly live in Santa Anna Nursing Home, North Jakarta. Marietal status and had children have a relationship with anxiety. Elderly who were married and had children was experiencing more anxiety than others.
