Abstract
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is an endemic disease in Indonesia. Diabetic patients have three times higher risk towards the Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) infection. PTB and diabetic mellitus (DM) patients produce an atypical thoracic radiography hence this may increase the risk of misdiagnosis on them. Few studies found differences in thoracic radiography of PTB patients with HbA1c < 7% (controlled DM) and HbA1c = 7% (uncontrolled DM). The aim of this research is to find out the relationship between the PTB lesion areas with the level of HbA1c in Atma Jaya Hospital.
Methods: This is a retrospective analytic research by opening medical records within the period of 2014-2015 in Atma Jaya Hospital. The subjects were the patients who are above 15 year-old and had been diagnosed of having PTB as well as DM . However, they do not suffer from HIV/AIDS or extrapulmonary TB.
Results: Out of 73 patients who suffered PTBDM, 42 patients met the criteria. The most common PTB lesion found is infiltrate. Ratio between men and women is 1,1:1. The age range is between 40 – 81 year-old with the mean of 53,38 and median of 53 year-old. The HbA1c level (controlled and uncontrolled DM) affects the PTB lesion areas on the thoracic radiography (P=0,021)
Conclusion: Gender and age do not affect the PTB lesion areas on thoracic radiography. Yet, there is a relationship between PTB lesion areas on thoracic radiography with the HbA1c level of diabetic patients.
