A path model of the mediational effects of the quality of relationships between spouse caregivers (N = 75) and their impaired partners was tested. Emotional closeness between spouses mediated the impact of the partner's cognitive impairment, but not functional impairment, 011 the caregiver's subjective effectiveness. In contrast to closeness, conflict had a direct, but not a mediating, influence on effectiveness. Discussion highlights the importance of interpersonal ties for research and interventions with spouse caregivers
