Immigration does not often make the front pages of the Indonesian papers or count among the contentious issues in domestic politics. Though the national and international press covered the standoff at Merak between Sri Lankan asylum seekers and Indonesian authorities late last year, the issue of immigration and asylum seekers in Indonesia is mostly of humanitarian rather than political interest.
