Acouple of weeks back, Samantha Power, the U.S. National Security Council Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, made a visit to Jakarta where she gave a talk about Indonesia’s role as an emerging democracy. The designation as “emerging democracy” meant not only that Indonesia was holding elections, but that it was becoming a regional power with the responsibility to be a leader in regional human rights issues. She mentioned the strong role Indonesia is playing in peacekeeping efforts with nearly 1700 troops and police in places like Lebanon, Congo, and Darfur, and cited this participation as evidence of Indonesia’s growing role and responsibility in the global community.
