Indonesia's room for democratic expression puts its Southeast Asian neigbours to shame. But some in the country continue to view peaceful political expression as direct threat to territorial integrity, especially in politically sensitive regions like Papua. The long jail times given to those daring to unfurl independence flags is indicative of the repressive mindset of some elements of Indonesia's leadership; but such responses are ultimately counterproductive.
