Abstract
Backround: Metabolic syndrome has been linked strongly with cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 2. An individu with metabolic dysfunction has greater risk for those two diseases. The 30-50 years age group are vulnerable to have a metabolic syndrome. In US, 20,3% 20-39 years age group had metabolic syndrome and the 40-59 years with 40,8%. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in indonesia was 28,8%. Central obesity, which is one of the characteristics of metabolic syndrome, can be measured by waist circumference. This study aimed to know the correlation between waist circumference and blood glucose level as one of criterias of metabolic syndrome.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Sample was taken randomly among workers at the age of 30-50s at Atmajaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Tools in this study were measuring tape to measure waist circumference and glucometer to measure blood glucose level in peripheral blood. There were 80 respondents at the age of 30-50 years old.
Results: Mean of waist circumference on men was 91,14 ±10,888 cm and on women was 81,57±7,597 cm. Mean of blood glucose level was 99,71 ± 13,893 mg/dl. There was no significant correlation between age and sex to waist circumference ( p men = 0,235, p women = 0,132). There was no significant correlation between sex and blood glucose level ( p = 0,18) whereas there was significant correlation between age and blood glucose level ( p = 0,001). There was significant correlation between body mass index (BMI) and blood glucose level ( p = 0,000).
Conclusions: There was significant correlation between waist circumference and blood glucose level. Respondents with central obesity had high blood glucose level at =100 mg/dl.
