Isi artikelEnglish as a foreign language in Indonesia plays a pivotal role in everyday life. It has become a compulsory subject at schools and become a means of communication in a wide variety of activities. Therefore, knowing English is a must, but secondary school graduates in Indonesia do not have adequate proficiency in English. To improve students’ English proficiency, there are various methods, strategies, and materials that can be employed in the classroom setting. One of authentic materials that can improve students’ English proficiency is literary works (poem, prose, and drama). The use of literary texts, which are selected judiciously and wisely, can be potentially powerful pedagogic tool (Anonym, 2010). For that reason, the teacher should have a rationale and a variety of imaginative techniques for integrating literary works with language teaching (Anonymous, 2010). There are various activities that assumed can improve students’ English proficiency, such as: poem recital, poem dictation, poem writing, split poem, story writing, drama script writing, drama performance, pair reading, defining words, picturing, word portraits, etc. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of literary works in foreign language learning. To address the topic, the article is arranged in the following outline: (1) Introduction, (2) Language and Literature, (3) Language and Literary Competence, (4) Teaching English Using Literary Texts, and (5) concluding remarks.
