Isi artikelUnlike many studies conducted on the development of English as first and second language (Berko, 1958; Brown, 1973, Hakuta, 1974 and 1976; Guasti, 2001; Tomasello, 2003; Diessel, 2004; O’Grady, 2005), the empirical study on English as a foreign language is quite rare, particularly in Indonesia. This study therefore investigated the development of the wan/wanna/want/ want to and imperative constructions in the English of an Indonesian boy named Rayesha Ikram Hardono (called Ray). It is a longitudinal study and the data was collected by audio-recording the subject’s spontaneous speech in two years. The result of the study shows that the acquisition of the wan/wanna/want/want to and imperative construction follow the universal principles as they are applied to English. By the end of the study, the subject managed to produce various patterns of wan/wanna/want/want to , formulaic to less formulaic constructions and 25 different patterns of imperative constructions-from simple to complex imperative constructions in various meanings.
