This paper is exploring the use of poetry made by English students in English classes. The main focus is to describe the students’ ability in writing English poetry and the main functions of poetry for them. This paper is based on the research conducted among the fourth semester students of English Education Department, Academic year 2009. The population is three classes but the sample is chosen randomly. There were 45 students taken as a sample out of 120 of the whole population. There were two instruments used in this research, namely the poetry making test and the open questionnaire. First the students) in the class were asked to write their own poems. These poems were then selected to see the four important aspects in poetry that can be developed by the students, namely the use of themes, sound devices, rhythm, and imagery. Later, they were asked to answer the questionnaire about the functions or the advantages they got by writing their own poems. The findings show that the students are able to produce poetry although they are still lacking of ability of producing good poetry such as in terms of rhyme and rhythm. In addition, the students find beneficial functions of making poems as a means of expressing ideas, self and social critics, personal enjoyment, and financial purposes.
