Abstract
Nowadays, the increase of screen time happen very rapidly. Screen time can be defined as time spent on screen-based entertainment, such as television, computer, and handphone. Many studies have found that screen time negatively affect cognitive ability, which is an ability that manage human’s thinking process. Meanwhile about cognitive ability, many studies have also found that it affected positively by physical activity, which is defined as any activity that cause energy expenditure to exceed resting energy. However, the effect of them on young people haven’t been certain. Therefore, this study is done on undergraduate students which is 18-25 years old, with purpose to analyze the factor’s effect on cognitive ability and to give recommendation to undergraduate students on how to enhance their cognitive ability, which is still needed by them. This study consider three main factors which are allegedly affect cognitive ability. That three factors are physical activity, screen time, and gender. Futhermore, confounding factors, which are said could affect cognitive ability theoritically, is also considered. They are sleep time, breakfast, and stress level. The data that have been collected then used for anaylisis of variance, where it’s found that physical activity and screen time affect undergraduate students’ cognitive ability. The addition of confounding factor as covariate is also done, where it’s found that sleep time also affect cognitive ability. Based on the factors affecting cognitive, a linear regression model is developed so it can be used for predicting undergraduate student’s cognitive ability. From this over all study, it can be concluded that physical activity and sleep time give positive impact to cognitive ability, while screen time give negative impact to cognitive ability. Based on that, recommendation is given about physical activity, screen time, and sleep time, to enhance cognitive ability. An application, called Cognitive Ability Predictor, is also developed from the regression linier model. The application can be used to predict cognitive ability score easily and from the result, the subject get to know about what to do on physical activity, screen time, and sleep time to enhance cognitive ability.
