Isi artikelIt is reasonable to argue that we are basically a product of the predominantly top-down culture, thanks to Soeharto’s New Order regime. The case of recently detained tax official Gayus Tambunan, allegedly involved in embezzling billions of rupiah has further highlighted the urgent necessity of character building. It is the Javanese motto of covering the wrongdoings and the feudalistic mentality we have inherited, particularly since the Dutch divide-and-rule politics that segregated our society into imbalanced power relations favoring the Dutch (now perpetuated by many Western people who like to impose “more prestigious education”) that might make the historic freedom of information law came into force on 30th April 2010 with most state institutions, mired in a decades-long culture of secrecy, still in the dark over how to actually implement the law.
