Isi artikelThe aim of this study was to develop reading materials which are intended tobe used to assist the students for their independent reading activities. The subjects were the grade five students of SD Negeri 3 Banjar Jawa Singaraja. Based on the preliminary observation, it was found that the students’ reading activity, in and outside the class, was not supported by adequate reading materials. Their reading was restricted to the text books provided by the school. Besides, there was not enough effort from the school to develop the students’ independence in reading activity. Regarding these problems, a research and development study following Dick and Carey’s model was conducted. The model included planning, materials development, and evaluation. The collected reading materials were processed applying computer software called Hot PotatoesTM. The software enabled the researcher to create interactive exercises with a more attractive appearance. There were two types of exercises which had been developed namely multiple choices and crossword. The developed materials were evaluated by experts and the English teacher of the school. The materials were also tried out by the students in the preliminary and main field testing. The result of the study showed that the reading materials for independent reading activity could well be developed by using Hot PotatoesTM. The study also revealed that the developed materials were helpful in improving the students’ reading activity. After using the materials, the students could get higher score than before. It could be seen from the improvement of the students score in reading from 40.67 in the pre-test to 73.34 in the main field test.
