Isi artikelThis study was aimed at finding out the effectiveness of collaborative technique to develop writing ability of the students of State Polytechnics of Sriwijaya in business correspondence.The population was the semester-four students of State Polytechnics of Sriwijaya in the academic year of 2009-2010. There were 45 students from accounting department taken purposively as the samples. In a quasi experiment with non-equivalent control group design, the data were collected through pre test and post-test, supported by a set of questionnaire related to the application of the technique. The results of the research were analyzed by using t-test. The results showed that there was significance difference between the students who were taught by using collaborative technique, and those who were taught by using conventional one. From the result it can be concluded that the collaborative technique gave significance result on the experimental group. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the curve indicated that the students strongly agreed and agreed, that collaborative technique was a pleasant technique to get involved, they were satisfied with the result of the technique, it supported students' learning, sufficient opportunity was given for the corrections, they received positive and negative feedback from the members of the group. They understood the goals of the collaborative technique, the lecturer treated all students in the class equitably; however, not all members in their group had good competence in English, especially in business correspondence. They sometimes had difficulty in understanding the corrections of their peers, and they believed that the corrections of their peers were fair
