Isi artikelHaving purpose in learning is quite important to make it meaningful especially in EAP reading which is multifaceted. In classroom, it becomes the job in part of teacher to set the objective and help the learner to read with purpose. In real life, one surely has his own purpose in reading. To find out one’s purpose in reading can be done by knowing type of text he usually reads. Therefore, it is important to know the students’ preferred text to know the purpose they usually have and kinds of strategies they usually employ. The study then attempts to find out the preferred text type and reading activities the students like to have. The study involved 31 sophomore students from informatics class of ITTELKOM Bandung and the results of study showed that most students preferred to read information from journalistic text, literary text and correspondence. Besides, in reading activity, the students preferred to do activities which relate to find meaning idea, retelling and completing the picture. They do not really like to find specific information on special terms or grammar, to have discussion on the writers’ idea, to make presentation and to make summary. These findings may prove that the students are likely to get up dated information from various reading topics and they also like to read for pleasure. In addition, as adult learners who know already the process of learning, the students have already known the right way to comprehend the text. However, the data showed that the most students do not like to do activities which require high order thinking skill. For that reason, in EAP reading which usually uses text with specific information about subject matter, a teacher should be able to find more various and elaborate information on subject matter and present it in attractive way. In addition, the teacher should also set higher teaching objective and create the graded but interesting activities that enable students to create some purposes in the process to accomplish the higher objective learning performance.
