Abstract
Background: Game addiction is a condition in which someone experiences an inability to control the desire to play games, to the detriment of the subject. One such detriment is the deterioration of the quality of sleep, caused by the lack of sleep due to time spent to play games. In Indonesia, there has not been much research into the effect of game addiction to quality of sleep, and there is no research that focuses on specific groups such as medical students. One study found out that there is a high prevalence of game addiction among medical students in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Thus, this research intends to find the impact of game addiction on quality of sleep among medical students in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
Methods: This research isan descriptive analytic study with a cross-sectional approach on 100 respondents. The respondents consisted of class year 2012, 2013, and 2014 medical students in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. The Videogame Addiction Test (VAT) questionnaire was used to determine game addiction, and the Pittsburgh’s Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to determine the quality of sleep. Analysis of data was done with the computer program.
Result: From 100 respondents in total, 49% have game addiction, and 66% suffer from poor sleep quality. The number of respondents who have game addiction and
suffer from poor sleep quality is 43%. This research shows that there is a association between game addiction and quality of sleep (p=0,000).
Conclusion: There is a marked association between game addiction and quality of sleep among medical students in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia
