Abstract
Background. Empathy is a critical component in doctor-patient relationship. One of the key factors that can lower empathy is distress, whereas the incidence of distress in medical students is high.
Objective. To obtain empathy of medical students in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (FKUAJ) and its relation to various factors.
Methodology. This cross-sectional study was conducted in August-September 2015. Subjects were 162 preclinical and clinical students of FKUAJ. Empathy was assessed by Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE), while distress was measured with General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12).
Results. Mean empathy scores of FKUAJ students was 108.77±10.463. There was significant differences in mean empathy scores (p=0,001) between students who are positive distress (79%) and negative distress (21%). There were no significant differences between mean empathy scores by gender (p=0.782), level of study (p=0.955), residence (p=0.483), speciality preferences (p=0.450), social activities (p=0.804), and social media (p=0.448). There was no significant correlation between age (p=0.956) and number of siblings (p=0.172) with empathy score.
Conclusion. Empathy score was lower in students with distress. Cohort study with longitudinal approaches was recommended to confirm its impact to changes in medical students’ empathy.
