Abstract
Background. Nosocomial infection (Healthcare-associated infections) is one of the most important problems associated with the increase of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the causes of nosocomial infection. Multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus infection such as Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) may complicate therapy. Assessment of environmental indirect transmission risk need to figured out.
Objective. To understand the pattern of MRSA bacteria in Atma Jaya Hospital environment.
Method. This is a descriptive observational and cross sectional study, using purposive sampling. The study was conducted from January until April 2015. Swab samples were taken from medical equipment, the skin and nares anterior of healthcare personnel and patient’s hand in ICU, operation room and Mawar ward (surgery ward) in Atma Jaya Hospital.
Result. There were 72 samples collected, which Mannitol-Salt agar (MSA) was used as selective media. We found 3 (4.17%) samples positive with MRSA, 4 (5.55%) samples with non-MRSA Staphylococcus aureus, 22 (30.56%) samples of Coagulase- Negative Staphylococcus, and 43 (59.72%) samples with no Staphylococcus growth. MRSA was found in instrument trolley and bed in Mawar ward and the skin of ICU patient’s hand.
Conclusion. MRSA was found in Mawar ward and ICU of Atma Jaya Hospital. MRSA proportion compared to all Staphylococcus aureus isolation found in Atma Jaya Hospital environment is 42.86%.
