Abstract
BACKGROUND: Azadirachta indica (A. indica) has been widely used for treating various diseases. Its leaves are known to have antifungal activities. Candida albicans is the most common fungal species that infects human and causes candidiasis. The incidence of resistance to antifungal treatment is currently increasing. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of A. indica leaves as alternative antifungal agent by observing its effect on C. albicans growth.
METHOD: Fresh leaves of A. Indica obtained from Bogor Institute of Agriculture were extracted with soxhletation method using 95% ethanol as the solvent. The extract was dried with rotary evaporator. C. albicans sample was obtained from the Department of Parasitology FKUAJ. The experiment used disc diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar medium. Experimental groups used the extract with 5 different concentrations i.e 10 mg/mL, 7.5 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL, 2.5 mg/mL and 1.25 mg/mL. The control groups consisted of positive control containing ketoconazole 10 µg/mL and negative control. Statistical analysis used was Mann Whitney test.
RESULT: There were no inhibition zone observed on all experimental groups.
CONCLUSION: Ethanolic extract of A. indica leaves has no antifungal activity against C. albicans growth.
