Abstract
Background: Atherosclerosis is the accumulation of plaque in the form of fat, calcium, fibrin or other substances in the artery walls that can cause narrowing of the artery diameter so that the distribution of oxygen to the cells are reduced.
Atherosclerosis can be triggered by various factors, which is the hypertension is the most frequent. According to RISKESDAS (2012), Hypertension cases in Indonesia have reached 26.5%.
Methods: The design of this research is descriptive analytical research with cross sectional categorical approachment. The sample is non-academic employee of the Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine. Measuring of intima-media thickness carotid artery using ultrasonography assesses the grading of atherosclerosis. The data are statistically processed with SPSS version 20.
Results: The correlation between the duration of hypertension and atherosclerosis do not have a meaningful correlation with p-value is 0.441 and a coefficient correlation is 0.625, whereas the classification of hypertension and atherosclerosis has a significant correlation with p-value is 0.011 and a strong coefficient correlation is 0.71.
Conclusions: There is no significant correlation between duration of hypertension and atherosclerosis. However, there is a significant correlation between the classifications of hypertension with atherosclerosis in non-academic employee of the Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine.
