Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep-disordered breathing caused by obstruction of the upper airway therefore air cannot flow into the lung despite the effort to breathe and associated by intermittent hypoxemia. Sleep quality will be disturbed and cause excessive daytime sleepiness. OSA cam increase risk for cardiovascular event including congestive heart failure. In order to determine the effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on heart failure, a systematic review was performed, it includes 10 articles. All of the studies claim that OSA clearly can increases the risk of heart failure. It happens because OSA increase risk of heart failure underlying disease such as atheroclerosis, hypertension and myocardial infarction. There are various mechanism that cause the underlying disease such as systemic inflamation, altered lipid metabolism, free radical and insulin resistance. |
