Abstract
Background. Nosocomial infections have become a serious problem for centuries.A study once was done by taken the hand-swabs from the health professionals at Jakarta hospital. It shown that Escherichia coli is one of the most potential bacteria cause nosocomial infections. Since E.coli is common to be found in hospital clinical specimens and related to high risk of mortality, further studies are necessary to be done.
Objectives.The aim of this research was obtaining acquisition of Escherichia coli on several environmental surfaces and medical devices in Atma Jaya hospital.
Methodology. This descriptive observational study was conducted from January until April 2015 using cross sectional design and purposive sampling method. Samples were taken from surfaces, medical devices, and patients’ or health
professionals’ skins in Atma Jaya hospital, especially from ICU, operation room, and surgery ward (Mawar).
Results. A total of 96 samples were identified. Samples were inoculated on MacConkey agar. Escherichia coli was found in three samples (3,13%). Those were tap water, blade laryngoscope, and nurse’s hand in ICU.
Conclusions. Escherichia coli was found from medical devices and health professional’s hand in ICU.
