The present study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). Its prime objective is to reveal the way to improve the ability of the grade ten students of SMA Negeri 1 Kembangbahu Lamongan in writing descriptive text through the use of picture series-aided learning strategy. The subjects of the study were the students of X.2 in the second semester of 2009/2010 academic year. The researcher implemented the picture series aided learning strategy within five main activities, namely, prewriting, organizing, writing rough draft, revising, and editing. The picture-aided learning strategy itself was implemented in the prewriting stage to elicit the students’ ideas. Then, to obtain data on the students’ achievement and improvement in writing ability the researcher employed a scoring rubric. The result of the study proves that the use of picture series-aided learning strategy improves the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The evidence showed that the students’ writing had been rich of ideas, focused on the object of the description, and obeying the descriptive text convention: being written according to generic structure of the text and spatial order as well as using simple present tense, linking verbs, adjective, noun phrases, and preposition. Their average score also increased from 56.86 in preliminary study into 77.87 at the end of the cycle. Moreover, their motivation and interest in learning writing are also improved.
