This research aims at knowing the improvement of the students’ essay writing ability after conferencing. Besides, this research aims at knowing the students’ responses to the implementation of conferencing. This is a kind of action research. The design of this research is spiral model suggested by Kemmis and McTaggart (Koshy, 2005:4). The researcher plans, acts and observes, and reflects on the students’ essay writing learning process using conferencing as a way of teaching. This research was conducted from April to June 2008 in a Writing IV class in the English Education Study Program at Ahmad Dahlan University. The instruments were pre test, assignments, observation notes, conference notes, reflection notes, reflection forms, and post test and post program questionnaire. The data were students’ essay writings, researcher’s notes, students’ reflections, and completed questionnaires. There were three cycles of intervention which lasted a total of seven weeks. The research was conducted in an essay writing course and involved 29 students. The great improvement indicated the positive direct impact of conferencing was shown by the students’ revisions of the assignments drafts. The mean of students’ achievement in the pre test was 58.6; and, the mean of students’ achievement in the post test was 63.0. Compared to the pre test result, there was an improvement shown in the students’ work in the post test, especially in the aspects of organization and mechanics. The other aspects (content, grammar, and vocabulary) did not improve significantly. As shown from the observations during the conferences and the completed questionnaires students showed positive responses to the conferencing process. Most of the students (90.6%) believed that conferencing helped them in practicing to write essays. As many as 82.8% of the students suggested that group conferencing should be held regularly(once to four times a month). Conferencing is a good way to supervise the students practice.
