Abstract
Background. Antioxidants are substances that can neutralize the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can lead to a state of oxidative stress. Plants have antioxidant effects that can neutralize free radicals. One example of plants that have antioxidant content is Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba. Objectives. The aim of this study is to determine the antioxidant potential of ethanolic extracts of Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba flowers. Methods. This research is an experimental in vitro. Samples from this study are Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba flowers. Extraction method with maceration using ethanol solvent concentration of 50%, 75% and 96% (~100%) for 5 days. The extracts were analyzed for the presence of tannin, terpenoid and flavonoid using phytochemical screening test. Antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH method with 517 nm spectrophotometer. Antioxidant activity was expressed as FRSA (Free Radical Scavenging Activity) percentages. Results. Shapiro-Wilk normality test showed abnormal data distribution, seen from the value of p <0.05. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed significant difference between Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba flowers, seen from the value of p <0.05. Post-hoc analysis of the Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference between Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba flowers with various concentrations of ethanol that are seen from the value of p <0.05. Conclusion. Plumeria rubra and Plumeria alba flowers have antioxidant potential.
